Il loro biglietto da visita è la vittoria del BBC Sound Of 2015 (che in passato aveva raccomandato di tenere d’occhio nomi come Adele, Sam Smith, Ellie Goulding) e c’è da scommettere che regaleranno grandi soddisfazioni nei prossimi mesi. Stiamo parlando degli Years & Years, che nel frattempo hanno piazzato il loro singolo King al comando della classifica ufficiale dei brani più venduti della settimana in Gran Bretagna.

Il giovane trio composto da Olly Alexander (voce e piano), Mikey Goldsworthy (basso) e Emre Turkmen (synths, beats) è riuscito in un’impresa quasi impossibile: spodestare Ellie Goulding con Love Me Like You Do dalla vetta della classifica inglese.

Il gruppo si forma nel 2010 dopo che Goldsworthy, da poco trasferitosi dall’Australia alla Gran Bretagna, conosce Turkmen online. Poco tempo dopo Alexander si unisce alla band come voce principale (Goldsworthy lo aveva sentito cantare sotto la doccia). La loro musica è descritta come elettropop, un mix R&B e house anni ’90, con influenze come Flying Lotus, Diplo, Radiohead e Jai Paul.

Dopo alcuni singoli di passaggio, nel 2014 gli Years & Years firmano con la Polydor Records e pubblicano il brano Take Shelter. L’EP raggiunge il primo posto della classifica dance di itunes UK. A fine anno arriva Desire che si piazza in 22° posizione nella classifica singoli inglese ma è con King che il trio scoppia prima grazie alla BBC, che li sceglie come “Sound del 2015” (in passato erano stati scelti 50 Cent, Mika, Adele, Ellie Goulding, Haim e Sam Smith), e poi grazie al pubblico che li porta in vetta alla classifica.
